Abstract:Necessary farmland circulation can make farmland moderately concentrated and improve agricultural productivity and farmland utilization efficiency. This study was aimed at analyzing the farmland circulation status over eastern, central, and western counties at varying levels of economic development of Guanzhong area in Shaanxi province based on household surveys in which 373 farmers' samples were collected. New characteristics of farmland circulation and different farmers' behaviors in farmland circulation in developed, developing, and less developed regions were extensively compared and comprehensively summarized. Results show that due to the vastly different levels of economic development, the scale, methods and the price of the land circulation differ greatly in the three counties. The development of farmland circulation market shows an obvious gradient structure. The forms of farmland circulation are primarily lease and subcontract. The proportion of farmland circulation between the relatives and the friends is not high anymore. There is an obvious trend of the farmland to be transferred to cooperatives and large professional producers. The farmers' actions for transferring their farmland tend to show more market behaviors. Intermediary organizations play an increasingly important role in farmland circulation. The higher developed the farmland circulation market, the more normalized circulation behaviors. Farmers who transfer their farmland tend to sign formal contracts. The circulation contracts become more standardized. All of the farmers have the tendency to use cash payment for farmland rent. The period of farmland circulation is longer than before. By using SPSS, the study reveals the major reasons that may influence the land circulation: 1) the local non-agriculture income level; 2) the education level of the farmers; 3) the maturity of intermediary organization; 4)the social security level of the farmers.
